RFID Technology Enables Precise and Traceable Usage Counts for Surgical Gowns and Surgical Drapes
Publish Time:2026-01-09 00:00:00

In the hospital surgical scenario, defining the usage limits for surgical gowns and surgical drapes has always been a critical issue troubling medical institutions. To seize market share, some companies have exaggerated the number of product uses without any bottom line, with false claims ranging from 120 to 300 uses being commonplace, while the actual clinical usage is often far lower than the promised value. What is even more concerning is that many medical institutions only judge whether a product can continue to be used based on whether it is "damaged," ignoring the attenuation of liquid penetration resistance, which plants a huge hidden danger for surgical infections.

According to the YY/T0506 standard, the core criterion for defining the usage limit of surgical gowns and surgical drapes is the liquid penetration resistance of the critical areas, rather than appearance intactness. However, traditional manual recording methods make it difficult to accurately track the number of use, washing, and disinfection cycles for each product, nor can they synchronously match the protective performance testing data.

At this point, Juyun Smart provides an efficient solution to this industry pain point.

I. RFID Laundry Chips: Equipping Every Fabric with an "Exclusive ID Card"

Based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, Juyun Smart uses non-contact radio frequency signals to quickly achieve item identification and data reading/writing. When applied to the management of surgical gowns and surgical drapes, the core idea is to give each reusable product a unique electronic chip, like an "exclusive ID card," to record the full lifecycle information of the product throughout the entire process:

RFID Laundry Chip

1. Tag Implantation: During the production of surgical gowns and surgical drapes, high-temperature resistant, acid-alkali resistant, and waterproof RFID electronic tags are embedded in non-critical areas (without affecting protective performance or surgical operations). The basic product information is pre-stored in the tags, including protection level (standard performance/high performance), registered and declared usage limit, production batch, etc.

RFID tags are sewn into the fabric

2. Deployment of Read/Write Devices: RFID readers/writers are deployed at the operating room exits, washing and disinfection workshops, sterilization workshops, and storage areas. When products pass through these areas, the readers/writers automatically identify the tag information, completing data collection without the need for manual intervention.

II. Full-Process Tracking: Accurately Recording Every Usage Cycle

Use → Recycle → Clean → Sterilize → Redistribute, fully automatic counting throughout the process:

· Upon completion of surgery, the reader/writer at the recycling point automatically records "usage count +1."

· Process parameters are synchronously recorded during the cleaning and disinfection process.

· Before distribution, the system automatically verifies whether the usage count is within the safe range.

III. Data Linkage: Precisely Matching Usage Counts with Protective Performance

According to industry standards, the actual usage limit for surgical gowns and drapes must be based primarily on "liquid penetration resistance test results at different usage counts." Juyun Smart leverages RFID technology to meet this requirement through data linkage:

  1. Establish a Test Data Correlation Database: When medical institutions conduct regular sampling inspections of surgical gowns and drapes, they bind the RFID tag information of the test samples with the test results—including the liquid penetration resistance values at 0 times, 10 times, 20 times... up to the registered declared usage limit (e.g., standard performance surgical gowns ≥20cmH?O, high-performance surgical gowns ≥100cmH?O)—and enter them into the system.
  2. Intelligent Alerts and Scrapping Reminders: When the system detects that a product's usage count reaches a preset threshold (e.g., 10 uses for high-performance products), it automatically triggers a sampling reminder. Medical staff can determine whether to continue using it based on the sampling results. If the test results show that the liquid penetration resistance fails to meet the corresponding standard (e.g., a high-performance surgical gown falls below 100cmH?O after 11 uses), the system immediately marks the product as "Scrapped" and prohibits redistribution, eliminating infection risks from the source.
  3. Eliminating Data Falsification: The usage counts recorded by the system come from fully automated collection throughout the entire process, rather than self-declaration by companies or manual entry, effectively avoiding the industry chaos of "registered declared usage counts not matching actual usage counts." At the same time, the data is traceable and verifiable. If a failure to meet protective performance standards occurs, the product batch and usage records can be quickly located, clarifying the responsible parties.

The Triple Value of RFID Technology

The current chaos stems from "vague usage counting" and "disconnection of performance data." Juyun Smart, through RFID technology, achieves "one item, one code; full-process tracking; data linkage," transforming abstract usage counts into quantifiable and verifiable precise data, truly implementing industry standard requirements.

· Cost Reduction: Precise counting avoids waste caused by premature replacement and prevents risks associated with exceeding usage limits, achieving a balance between cost and safety.

· Efficiency Increase: Replaces manual paper records, reduces workload and human errors, and improves the efficiency and standardization of management processes.

· Compliance: Full-process data is available for inspection at any time, meeting regulatory requirements, supporting academic research, and eliminating data inaccuracies.

With the widespread application of Juyun Smart's RFID technology, hospitals will gradually build a standardized, closed-loop management system of "precise counting - regular sampling - intelligent scrapping." This system will completely change the previous extensive management model that relied on manual experience and product marketing, driving medical consumables management toward a high-quality development path of "evidence-based and precisely controllable," while effectively ensuring the safety of doctors and patients and achieving a systematic improvement in management efficiency.

There are no small matters in medical protection; every precise count is a solemn safeguard for life safety. Supported by RFID technology, Juyun Smart is building a solid "data defense line" for the surgical sterile barrier through the power of technology.
