Hospital with Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine

Jiangsu Province Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine was founded in 1956. Its predecessor was the Jiangsu Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1995, it adopted its current name, and in 2005, it was officially recognized as a Class A Grade III integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine hospital. As one of China's first key integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine hospitals, it integrates medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, prevention, healthcare, and rehabilitation. The hospital serves as the base for the National Traditional Chinese Medicine Emergency Medical Rescue Team and is designated as the Jiangsu Branch of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. It has developed notable disciplinary strengths in areas such as thyroid diseases and spinal degenerative diseases. Currently, the hospital also functions as the Third Clinical Medical College of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. It hosts national-level scientific research platforms, including the National Clinical Research Base for Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2023, it was additionally designated as the Jiangsu Provincial Occupational Disease Hospital, continuously advancing innovations in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment.

Recently, an intelligent and refined operating room behavior management system has been officially launched at the Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. By introducing "smart dispensing cabinets for surgical scrubs/shoes," "smart recycling cabinets for surgical scrubs/shoes," and "smart visual monitoring screens," the system has successfully achieved digitalized, closed-loop management of operating room staff attire and behavior. This marks a solid step forward for the hospital in its smart hospital development and infection control management.

In hospital management, the operating room is not only the technical core but also a critical area for infection control. In the past, the management of surgical scrubs and shoes often represented a troublesome "gray area": issues such as significant loss and wear of clothing and footwear, and the risk of cross-contamination during clean and soiled storage, not only increased operational costs but also posed potential infection risks.

To thoroughly address this management challenge, the Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine conducted in-depth research and meticulous planning, successfully implementing the "Intelligent Operating Room Behavior Management Solution."

Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine — After the Intelligent Renovation of Operating Rooms

01、Intelligent Closed Loop: From "People Managing People" to "Process Managing People"

The core of this system lies in establishing an intelligent closed-loop process characterized by "smart distribution, controllable behavior, visible workflows, and traceable responsibilities."

· Smart Distribution: Convenient and Standardized

Medical staff can simply swipe their ID cards or use facial recognition at the smart dispensing cabinet to receive a clean set of surgical scrubs and shoes. The system automatically logs the issuance information, achieving "one code per person, responsibility assigned to the individual."

· Smart Recycling: Clear Separation of Clean and Soiled Items

After surgery, medical personnel deposit the used surgical scrubs and shoes into the smart recycling cabinet, completing the usage loop.

02、Visualized Dashboard: Making Management "Clear at a Glance"

Another major highlight of this project is the smart visual monitoring screen installed at the entrance to the operating rooms. It serves as the "intelligent brain" and "supervisor" for the operational status of the entire system.

Operating Room Behavior Management — Smart Visual Dashboard

The dashboard displays key management data in real-time through a rolling interface, including:

· Violation Alerts: Provides real-time notifications of personnel who fail to comply with dress code regulations or do not return garments and shoes promptly, enabling precise management.

· Inventory Status: Clearly shows the real-time stock levels and usage statistics of surgical scrubs and shoes, facilitating accurate logistics planning by the support department.

· Inventory Alerts: Automatically triggers warnings when stock levels fall below the safety threshold, preventing situations where supplies run out.

This transparent management approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also significantly strengthens healthcare workers' self-discipline in adhering to regulations.

03、Project Outcomes: A Triple Win in Management, Infection Control, and Cost Efficiency

After the system went live, the results were immediately evident:

· Refined Management: Achieved 100% traceable linkage between personnel and supplies, with behavior management fully standardized.

· Standardized Infection Control: Established a clear, single-direction workflow for separating clean and soiled items, significantly reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

· Cost Savings: The loss rate of garments and footwear dropped notably, enabling refined asset management and effectively lowering the hospital's operational costs.

The successful implementation of the Intelligent Operating Room Behavior Management System at the Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine stands as another exemplary case of the hospital’s drive toward "lean management and smart services." This initiative represents not just an upgrade in equipment, but a profound shift in management philosophy. Moving forward, the hospital will continue to explore deeper integration of information technology with healthcare management, leveraging smart healthcare to drive high-quality development and provide patients with safer, higher-quality medical services.
